Make Your House More Sellable

  • Clean up the clutter. Pack away small decorative items. Throw away stacks of magazines. Clean the closets so they seem larger. Clean out the garage and basement.

  • Wash windows and screens to let in more light.

  • Keep everything clean. Wash fingerprints from appliances, TVís, and light switches. Mop and wash floors. Clean the inside of the refrigerator and oven. A clean house is a great first impression and makes the buyer feel you have cared for the house.

  • Eliminate unpleasant smells. Clean the carpet and drapes to reduce the cooking odors, smoke, and pet smells. Open the windows.

  • Pets underfoot . . . Keep them out of sight--preferably out of the house.

  • Replace burnt out light bulbs. A bright house is inviting.

  • Make minor repairs in situations that can create a bad impression. Small problems such as sticky doors, torn screens, cracked caulking, or dripping faucet may seem minor, but theyíll give buyers the impression that the house isnít well-maintained. Often just painting the trim, doors, and eves will give a house a fresh new look.

  • Keep your yard tidy. Cut the grass, rake the leaves, trim bushes, and edge the walks. Bright, annual flowers in a pot or in the landscaping enhances the curb appeal.

  • Patch hole in a paved driveway or a fresh coat of stone to a gravel driveway.

  • Clean the gutters.

  • Polish the front doorknob, door, and house number.

  • Paint the rusty mailbox.
